The Papers of James Monroe

James Monroe, fifth president of the United States and author of the Monroe Doctrine, is one of Virginia’s most prominent native sons. His five-decade career as a public servant, during which time he held more public offices than any other U.S. president, included positions as a congressman, senator, governor, diplomat, secretary of state, secretary of war and two-term president. The Papers of James Monroe, a project based at UMW, is in the process of preparing and publishing select portions of Monroe’s voluminous correspondence. We invite you to visit the exhibit at Simpson Library through July 1 to read more about the documentary editing process, see samples of Monroe’s notoriously bad handwriting and view objects pertaining to his time as a young lawyer in 18th century Fredericksburg. All objects featured in this exhibit are owned by the James Monroe Museum, located at 908 Charles Street in downtown Fredericksburg.

Mary Washington College/India Exchange Program, 1963-1970

From 1963 to the early 1970s, Mary Washington College faculty participated in an exchange program with colleges in India. Funded by the US State Department and the Danforth Foundation, the aim of the program was to enrich the curriculum in the colleges of both countries to strengthen the understanding of other cultures. President Grellet Simpson was a prominent supporter of the program and journeyed several times to India as did eight other faculty members.

The exhibit showcases the wealth of materials, especially photographs, that the University Archives holds relating to the exchange program. The exhibit was created by UMW students, Anna Moulis and Kelli Weir, for their final project in the Historic Preservation Department’s Archives & Society class.

Digitization of UMW’s Academic Course Catalogs

UMW Libraries is pleased to announce the digitization of the University’s academic course catalogs. Volumes from 1913-2013 are now available full-text and searchable online through the Internet Archive.

First published in 1911 as the Bulletin of the State Normal and Industrial School for Women, this publication provides lists of faculty, course descriptions, photographs of the college, and other information relevant to specified academic terms. Due to the fragile condition of the earliest volumes, the digitization of the academic course catalogs begins with the State Summer School and School of Elementary Methods catalog (July, 1913). The academic catalogs continue to undergo title changes over the years, reflecting the growth of the University. The catalog title changes to the Bulletin of the State Normal School, Fredericksburg, Virginia (June, 1915), Bulletin: State Teachers College, Fredericksburg, Virginia (April, 1924), Bulletin, Mary Washington College (January, 1938), Bulletin, Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia (January, 1944), Mary Washington College, Academic Catalog/Bulletin (June, 1972), and the University of Mary Washington Academic Catalog (2005-2007). Academic catalogs for the University’s graduate programs were first published in the 2000-2001 academic year

The Internet Archive allows for multiple methods of searching and viewing the course catalogs. The user can page through a catalog choosing the “read online” option, download the entire catalog in PDF format, and search the full text. This digitization project was made possible through UMW Libraries, the LYRASIS Mass Digitization Collaborative, and LYRASIS’ scanning partner, Internet Archive.

Library System Upgrades, Intermittent Downtime May 16

On Thursday, May 16, UMW Libraries will be performing updates on several library systems, such as the library catalogs, Archives @ UMW, user authentication, interlibrary loan, and desktop computers in Simpson Library. Downtime will be short and intermittent throughout the day.

UMW Libraries Closed May 13 & the Morning of May 14

UMW Libraries will be closed all day on May 13 for staff development. On Tuesday, May 14, Simpson Library will be open from Noon to 5PM. The Stafford Campus Library will be open from 1PM to 5PM.

Expanded Access To Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

UMW Libraries now has institution-wide access to Thesaurus Linguae Gracecae (TLG). Previously, access to this title had been limited to a small number of dedicated workstations on campus. TLG is a digitized collection of Greek texts dating from Homer (8 c. B.C.) to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453 and beyond.

Note: the database will prompt users to choose how to input and display Greek characters. Unicode, Option A, should work for most browsers.

Simpson Library Will Open at 7PM on March 31st

Simpson Library service hours on Easter Sunday, March 31st, will be 7PM to Midnight. Study hall hours will be from 10PM to 2AM. The Stafford Campus Library is closed on Sundays.

Trial Access To Global Industry Reports

UMW Libraries has trial access to IBISWorld’s Global Industry Reports. Global Industry Reports offer detailed and up-to-date forecasts on the industry performance of 75 industries from key regions around the world. Trial access expires at the end of April.
