How do I get better search results?

Save time and frustration by using these Quick Search Tips (PDF) to narrow your search results. These strategies will help you find more relevant results and will work with most databases and internet search engines.

How do I find ERIC documents that are not available online?

The Stafford Library owns selected ERIC documents on microfiche from 1966-1990 and a complete set from 1991-2003. Printing of microfiche articles at the Stafford Library is free. If UMW Libraries does not own the ERIC documents you need, you can request these documents and other library materials by using Interlibrary Loan (ILL).

How do I find the stacks?

Because there are two campus libraries, the books you need could possibly be in two locations.  The library catalog will provide you with the location of all the items available at UMW Libraries.  If a book listed in the online catalog has a location of “Stacks,” it is available in Simpson Library on the Fredericksburg campus.  A book located at the Stafford Campus Library will have a location of “Stafford Campus” or “Stafford Stacks”. To request a book from the Simpson Library, you may place a request online using Interlibrary Loan (ILL). For more information, please see the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) page.  Please ask at the Stafford Library staff if you need assistance in locating any book or article.

How do I request books or articles from Simpson Library?

To request a book or article that is available at the Simpson Library, place your request online using Interlibrary Loan (ILL). For more information, please see the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) page. Interlibrary Loan should also be used to place  requests for materials not owned by UMW Libraries. If you need assistance placing requests, please contact the Stafford Library Staff at stafflib@umw.edu or 540-286-8025.

Please note that the recall button in the UMW Libraries’ Catalog does not allow you to place a request for books held at Simpson Library. A recall may only be placed on material that is currently checked-out from the UMW Libraries by another patron, with the exception of Course Reserve materials.

How do I request books or articles that UMW Libraries doesn’t own?

To request a book or article that UMW Libraries does not own, place your request online via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). For more information, please see the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) page.  Interlibrary Loan (ILL) can also be used to place Document Delivery requests for books or articles from the Simpson Library. How do I make a purchase request?

Is there a book or video you would like to see on our shelves? The UMW Libraries welcome recommendations from faculty, staff, and students for materials to be purchased for our collections. Please submit your requests online via our new Purchase Request Form. While we cannot guarantee that all requested items will be purchased, all input is appreciated and will be considered! If you need the requested item immediately, please place an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Request and we will attempt to borrow the item for you from another library.
